  2. to be precise: it's the answer to the ultimate question about "the life, the universe and everything", in the sci-fi series called the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas noel adams a.k.a. dna. the significance of this answer, which is provided by the most intelligible computer after calculating for [i don't remember the exact time frame] in 10 million years, is that it was the answer for sure, but the "people", who were seeking for the answer, didn't know what exactly the question was, apart from that it was the question about "the life, the universe and everything". but, what was it? so, in short, it is not precisely "the meaning of the universe" but the answer to the ultimate question, which is supposedly leading to that very meaning, that is to be calculated by another (bigger) computer within an indeterminate time frame, which unfortunately happens to be...

  4. according to douglas adams it was an obvious number to choose as the answer for the ultimate question.

    well, people's obsession with the unknown and trying to give a meaning to -pretty much- everything helped it to become a famous number. as far i know, the most fantastic answer to the question "why 42?" was:

    that its (42) upside down mirror image was 24, which could be decyphered as 2 - b, which 2 b is "to be" and "to be" is .. aah, i think you get the message.
