I think he is the luckiest politician in the world, look at his history;
-He became mayor of Istanbul after awful mayor Nurettin Sozen who has made corruption at ISKI(The water management of Istanbul) basically he couldn't manage to solve Istanbul problems in addition he added some corruption problems. Therefore after his awful time, Recep Tayyip Erdogan started to serve people in Istanbul, he got great success in this time because resident of Istanbul was comparing him with Nurettin Sozen and he also emphasized his work with Sozen`s work. When he was mayor, he was found guilty by reading poem, this made him really famous all around Turkey. That is true that he was taking steps so fast in that time.
-After he was released, He found party as Adelet ve Kalkinma Partisi. His party was the first party in his first election in 3 November 2002 and he elected 59th Prime Minister of Turkey. He was lucky again because he became PM after older PM Bulent Ecevit whose government caused the most effective economic crisis in Turkey`s history. Again He found the opportunity to compare his work with Ecevit`s awful time. During the his first ministry, he started to lose support from public. He also accept this argument but when the discussion of president came out. He could manage to transfer this discussion to support. Turkey has gone to election again in 2007 and basically Turkish has voted just one thing that is confirming Abdullah Gul as a president. I can say Tayyip Erdogan wanted to be president after serious and cold president Ahmet Necdet Sezer but there were many organizations against for him. Anyway, he changed election style of president, Turkish public will vote president instead of members of parliament. I think he is planning to be first president who is elected by public. However all this turkish internal politics , He is the one of the unforgettable politician in Turkey
